ATN THOR-HD 640 2.5-25x

Hi Community,

I've been keeping my eye out for a nice thermal scope about a year now. Today I finally decided to bite the bullet and put money down on the ATN Thor-HD 640 2.5-25x model.  This is really a large purchase for me, and will probably set me back a year or two for any further large splurge purchases with a hint of   ...

There is so little information out on it aside from the ATN Website, that I feel this is literally the riskiest purchase of my adulthood >.>

With that in mind, I will come back to these forum and post about what I learn from a normal joe consumer stand point. Videos and Pictures to follow. That way any one else on the fence can have a bit more insight than I.

This is also my first thermal, so that's going to be fun too.

There aren't many of them out in the wild yet, but there are a few videos posted in the facebook group. Most of those are 384s though since they came out first.

Got an update. I can expect about a month wait time. The units started shipping roughly 2 weeks ago. I'll be back.

Called in for a status update. At present, they are waiting for the lens to come in for the model ordered. Unfortunately they were unable to give a revised ETA.

I ordered/received the ThOr HD 640 2.5x25.
When I look in the scope' system settings under 'Device Type', my only choices are ThOr-HD & OTS-HD 384 x (various magnifications).
None of these 384 magnification profiles matches the 2.5x25 I ordered.

Question: why doesn't it show a 640 version to choose from (I assume lack of firmware), and what should I select for my scopes profile?


another question: on the ATN update page, it only lists X Sight, X Sight II, & BinoX. Nothing else, ThOr has never had a firmware update? How do you get a fresh load if you think yer current load is messed up?

Sorry I am still waiting for my order to be filled. I heard that the ATN App used with a smart phone might have additional functionality, but I have yet to find this out for myself.

I think they just released a firmware for the Thor-HD a day or two back, but it may just be the factory firmware from what I read on their Facebook page.

May I ask where or how long it took for you to get your scope? I ordered directly. I may end up cancelling and sourcing from one of their distributers... Also hows the quality from your perspective so far?

hey, Archer; I ordered mine from a retailer (Midway USA) Feb 14th. Finally received it 23rd of May. they said it was 'available' on their website ... not so, when I commented on the tardiness & lack of a back-order notification they promptly gave me a $150 in store coupon for my troubles and changed their website to reflect backordered.  

as for the quality, the view seems to be narrow for a 2.5x field of view on anything less than 100m; but the picture is fabulous at distance and with larger animals. so far there is only the blk/wht with inverse the color scheme) screen color options. the smooth zoom works well (if you can hold the equipment steady) but it has a slow reaction time. it does pixelate at magnification. the clarity of picture is more noticeable during cooler hours of the day, at 90+* everything absorbs/reflects the heat and blurs together - but come dusk (and even more so at night) the clarity is Cristal, and the defining detail is Superb. your depth perception will take some getting used to, it helps if you know what your looking at & the distances. I watched the neighbor & his wife repairing fence across the pasture (approx 600m) and I could easily identify the 4-wheeler ATV he was using, the neighbors (human figure unisex), and tell they had a pick-up trk (sry, I couldn't quite ID which make it was), and ID the horses in the pasture. this all just before dark while he was policing up his materials & tools for the day. sry no video of it, I've just started playing with the video. here is a quicky of the neighbors horses I took just now, not quite dark again (2130 hrs central). they are approx 250m out. the poles in the background are high-tension power lines and well over 1000m away, the poles in the fore ground are railroad tie fence posts (you can ID the 4" wood posts to the right of the ties). notice the horse tails swishing in the footage.

as mentioned in my previous post, I don't know which scope profile to choose, the selections are all 384 models and none of them are 2.5-20x. I chose a 1.25-.5x 384 model for this vid. I don't see any difference in the quality between the 384 profiles I've tried, but the mag pwr in the viewfinder reflects the profile chosen. in this vid, I zoomed from 1.25x to about 3 and back down. the zoom feature is sluggish to respond and takes a bit of getting used to. so assuming the profile I chose (1.25-5x) is paralleled to all profile versions, we used about 1/2 pwr mag availability - this should be equivalent to about 12x mag on the scope I have.

I have the Thor 640 HD. Have owned it for about a month or so.
I must say I was really looking forward to getting this unit. Sorry to say I am less than impressed with the ATN 640hd.
The first thing I noticed was the terrible striations in the viewing screen and video. These striations are both vertical and horizontal. NUCing does not reduce it much. It seems to get a little bit clearer to a certain degree but my older Thor 336 is clearer.
Next, I noticed that there are several subdirectories functions that show to be on the menu that are completely missing from the unit menu. This includes several subdirectories such as color palette, contrast and several others that it is supposed to have according to the Manual. I called ATN and finally got someone in the Tech Support. What a joke that was...several times in fact.
I was told the units was mailed without having all the subcategories added. What! This includes contrast! I was told the firmware upgrade would include these and was told it should be available in approximately 30 days. 5 weeks later I call and they answered my question about "when will upgrade come?" They said, "We can't tell you that!" I told them I was told a month 5 weeks ago. They said I shouldn't have been told that." Really?
I ask if the firmware upgrade would eliminate the screen striations. "It’s should" was all I was told.
I'm very disappointed in the 640hd. IMO it was released to soon. The customer support is a joke.

I have a Thor HD 640 in 2.5-25x. Been using it about 4 months now. Still learning all the ends and out but it is the best purchased I have ever made. Between my son and I we have 2 gen 1 x-sights with after marker IRs and a ATN Phosphorus Gen 2 Night Vision and the Thor puts them all to shame. I have a few pics and videos but have not figured out how to post them here. The closer deer is 150 yards and the other one is at 350 yards. The picture was taken a base magnification. Tried to post a video but the file  is too big. Will need to post it YouTube and give link when figure out how.

Hey, everybody I purchased the 384 x 1.5 ~ 5 on 8/22/16, received it 9/2/16 everything was working until I updated with #566 update released on 8/30/16

Then I didn't have Shooting solutions Icon or function along with the Bluetooth icon being removed. Also the altimeter & rangefinder is way off & malfunctioning even with GPS turned on.

Also the color palette is missing!

It took me a week to get a hold of tech support.

They told me the latest firmware update was supposed to fix the screen freezing problem but instead screwed up everything else !!!

The tech also told me "Thor HD was still in beta testing phase" W.T.F why is it even being sold right now !!! And the Bluetooth icon was only for show right now and possibly will be activated in the future when they convert to a external rangefinder & app!

I asked him when can I expect the fixed update he said maybe a month or so!

Warning do not update with file #566 because once you do you can't go back

I'm like alot of you & picked the Thor HD because of the extras they offered and the competition didn't come close !!! Boy did we get a surprise!!!

I am not very impressed with ATN’S product or support right now!!!

P.S. now ever time I try to use the external battery pack the screen freeze's !

Hi Guys,i purchased a Thor HD 2,5-25. Something went wrong with the firmware update. The unit asked me if i wanted to install the update and i said yes, after a while it said update failed, so i left it there, i then started my unit back up and nothing, nothing comes on, took out the card, nothing happened.
Please advice if there is something i can do to fix this problem please.
