Can I use the same sd card that I used to download the firmware to take photos and video? If I can will I loose the firmware when the scope prompts to "format card"

After you update firmware you want delete that file. Otherwise it will continue to ask if you want to update the file. Personally I format my SD card before I go out hunting to ensure it will work. Formating in the scope is the best way to do it.

Is it possible to save the firmware updates on my laptop as they would become available as a backstop just in case a need would arise to go back to a previous version? My concern is whether or not the firmware updates are one shot files and are volatile in that respect?

If you saved the .bin file you can use it as many times as you need.

Speaking of the SD card, has anyone come across specs that give a maximum memory size that is compatible for use in the X-Sight (II) ?

From the Manual: NOTE : If you are going to record video then microSD Card should be of Class 10 (10 mb/sec) or faster and have capacity from 4 to 64 Gb. manual.atncorp.com/xsight2/
