(Photo via Dennis Hill)BUTLER CREEK LENS CAPTo improve clarity of shooting during the day, modify a Butler Creek Flip-Open Objective Scope Cover with a small center hole. Similar to squinting, the small center hole changes the shape of the light as well as the amount of visible light by the scope, providing you with a more crisp and clear image. To perform this modification, you'll first need to purchase the correct size Butler Creek Flip-Open Objective Scope Cover for your X-Sight model. Note that the lens cap size may be different when used with and without the provided X-Sight sun shade.X-Sight 3-12x: Size 29 (without sun shade) / Size 28 (with sun shade)X-Sight 5-18x: Size 48 (with and without sun shade)Next, you'll need to cut out a small hole in the center of the lens cap. There is no single correct size for the center hole, however, keep in mind that it should be small enough to control daylight but still large enough to see through. This can be done by using a drill bit, bullet casing (9mm or .45 cal) and hammer or any other small round object and knife.Recommended hole size: 1/4 - 1/2"Other lens cap options:- Rubber lens cap (provided with X-Sight)
- Skoal smokeless tobacco lid
- Spray paint can top
- Cardboard insert
- Koozie

Hello, Just received my Butler Creek scope cover, size 39 for my 3x14. I drilled a 3/16-inch hole to start with to see how it works. I attached two photos showing the cover in the up and down position. Also, two photos were taken with the scope at a range of 150 feet with the cover up and down. I first manually focused the scope at about 40 feet with the cover up at 3x zoom, no photo. I then pointed the scope at some bushes across the street about 150 feet away at 14x zoom. The blurry image is with the cover up and the clear image is with the cover down. That's really slick the way it turns the scope into an autofocus scope. I have not played with it at night or at a distance further than 200 feet, so can’t comment on how that works. Cheers, PB

Yes, it makes a noticeable difference. I haven't updated this thread since my first post and since then I drilled the hole to 7/16" to get more light in. I first manually focused on the green leaves on the left of the photo with the lens cap open, which is about 70 feet away and the area off in the distance is about 150 feet away. Overall the 7/16" hole is much better than the 3/16". It's an overcast, rainy, and gloomy day just before 10:00 am when I took these shots. Cheers, PB. Open Closed

Is this lens cap an improvement over the cap with a hole that comes with the scope, or just handier to use?

Is this lens cap an improvement over the cap with a hole that comes with the scope, or just handier to use My scope didn't come with the cap with the hole, just the sunshade. The only advantage I can think of is, the Butler Creek cap has a flip up cap. It stays attached, don't have to unscrew it, then find a place to put it without it getting lost. Cheers, PB

Xsight 1 did not come with the re stricter plate. Just the sun shade. Xsight 2 and up did. Thats why the X1 owners like me as well did the butler creek flip cover mod to gain a much better day view. With out it in bright sunlight the color orange for me totally disappeared. Couldnt even see the target to shoot at it. Also helps looking through shadows that it sucked at without it. Mine started loosing focus on recoil. I found the screws to tighten to fix that but after 4 or 5 shots same thing. So I put it on my cross bow. A perfect match!!!!!!!
