I was directed to this forum as a possible way to gain information for my possible purchase of a the Thor HD 384....
New to group and as my previous posts I am working on building my understanding of Thermal rifle scope platforms for my predator hunting activities. My question today is the core of the Thor HD 384 is Obsidian. I am also considering Armasight product which has the Flir TAU 2 core. I would expect the Flir to be better known just given its time in the market and I wish to better understand the Obsidian and how it stacks up. Is there any knowledgebase , blog or other that compares the two? Thx in advance for your newbie patience...

The new ThOR HD series runs on a new and improved Obsidian "T" (Thermal) Core II that was developed by ATN. I'm not aware of any comparisons, but it's something the admins can look into.

Hello, I am new to this forum as today, The 5x 18 was my first night vision, It has worked fine for me. My next purchase will be a thermal and i am not tied to any brand. My decisions will be made on quality and performance.. That narrows the playing field to down to ATN and Armasight because of the pricing I want to be no more than 7k. This is the Armasight I am looking at, Armasight Zeus 640 3-24x75 or Armasight Zeus Pro 640 2-16x50mm. The ATN, ATN Thor640 Thermal Imaging Weapon Sight - 5x, 640x480, 30Hz TIWSMT645B.. I have emailed both companies and only heard back from one, for information.. Can anyone clear up the benefits and features because this purchase is only going to happen one time. I do belong to the facebook ATN owners group also.

The ThOR HD's haven't been released yet so I don't know of any direct comparison images available.
The actual sensor is made by ULIS but ATN is making a custom core behind it to process that image. Assuming they do a half decent job of of it, you will not notice much of a difference between it and any of the BAE/FLIR cores out there. If they do a really awesome job of it, there might be a few post processing features that make it stand out above the rest. We just have to wait and see. I think the BAE cored units like the IR hunter are the guys to beat right now.
Aside from the quality of the thermal image, you have to think about price/features/quality.
ATN pretty much has everyone whipped on price.
The features look like they will be nice, pretty much everything the X Sights can do, this guy will also do. Onboard recording/image capture to an SD card is something no one else does. For me, this is a huge advantage. No more external recorder, no more video quality loss because of conversions between scope and recorder etc.
Quality of the previous line of ThOR's was pretty darn good. So I think we will be OK in that category too.
At this point we just have to really wait and see.
