I have a brand new 4K Exide. Do I need the ABL unit for rangefinding? The option comes up on the menu but it is very inconsistent with its measure.

Yes, you need the ABL for accurate automatic ranging. Or you can dial in the range if you have a regular range finder. The on board range Estimator is almost useless.
