Hey darkstar We had a similar thing down here in NZ a few years back. A couple of fishing shops were parallel importing Shimano reels, mainly the big gold ones. Shimano in NZ huffed and puffed, threatened legal action vowed and declared that none of these reels would be supplied with parts through the NZ dealer network. End of day parts were available to service them. I have 2 and there is not a thing wrong with them, except I got them several hundred dollars cheaper. A lot of the companies doing firearms and associated equipment are using the ITAR regs to achieve the same thing. ITAR only relates to military equipment - nothing that a company like ATN or Pulsar does relates to military equipment - it would not pass their reliability requirements for a start. Got told by an ATN guy at a show down here that we will not get the Thor here because of ITAR - at the end of the day it will be ATN's loss not mine as I have already decided on a Pulsar thermal unit that will more than cover my needs and it is stable - also has no ITAR issues - funny that. However, I digress - I see a similar thing to the shimano reels down here developing with this dealer in the UK. At the end of the days ATN have manufactured the units he is selling, so what is the issue - we are constantly told, we live in a global market - just some of these companies still have their heads in the sand and are running protectionism.
