New 4k out of box. Completed all startup, firmware update (xx.185), factory rest. And went through rotation directions in order to calibrate gyro system(?). CAL indicator did go away and compass is visible. Scope operates seemingly fine however the compass is nearly stuck on one direction. Level scope and rotate 360 deg and indicator moves barely 15 deg. Interesting if I point scope directly down towards ground and scale becomes very responsive and responds to rotating. Picture the rotating around the ol baseball bat in contact with your forehead. That's the scope manipulation that the compass responds to. Strange.
Help?

Hallo, I add non reticle in pictures and video, no value of battery level, mandatory to make a photo for centering reticle. When next firmware ?

Just curious dmarkie if there is any steel or iron around where you are trying to calibrate the scope - ie door handles, hinges, fridges/ovens etc.

No Odin. Just sitting in my recliner. 😊. Now when I point scope down I get the SMD note for significant metal/iron and in normal horizontal position the ecompass still is not functioning properly.

Probably a lot of metal in the chair laced into a nice grid of springs, maybe try it outside

I am having trouble with the compass indicating an "SMF". At the time I was standing in an open field away from power lines an no vehicles around. Is the compass really that sensitive or just a bug in the system?

Is the compass really that sensitive or just a bug in the system? Larry I had that problem with one of my scopes on an AR15. After pulling my hair out trying to figure why SMF message was always there I checked my rifle for magnetism and discovered that the bolt carrier group had become a strong magnet. I took the BCG to a friend that runs an avionics shop and used his degaussing coil to kill the magnetism. That cured it. One way to create a magnet is hammering iron. A bolt carrier group from a machine gun or one with just a double butt-load of rounds can become a strong magnet. I called ATN to tell them about it and they didn't seem too interested.

b29, thank you for the response. I can understand the gun becoming a strong mag, but the scope is designed to be used on the gun, the "SMF" is an error in the software IMHO. I don't want to take my gun somewhere to be degaussed. What is also very upsetting is that my watch and my GPS, both with working compass features continued to work 100%. Everyone has their story and ideas about the ATN product line. IMHO. I think ATN has released a product without a strong customer service network that can and will address customer questions. It appears to me that ATN has my money, the product will work most of the time with most of the features functional at some level. This product is, IMO, built down to a price.
I don't mean to rain on you, this is a problem with my product. I hope the product will work for you.

Silvergoose, I too was unable to calibrate the compass when it was mounted on my AR during initial setup. I took the 4K off of the rifle and calibrated the compass. I then remounted the scope to my AR and it has continued to operate.

Jim, my product was calibrated in much the same way as yours. I have mine mounted on a standard hunting style rife ( Hawa 1500 270). The calibration does not hold and I still get the "SMF" notification.
For what I need the compass is just not needed, but it does not excuse the lack of response from the company to a customer problem.
Jim, thanks for the input.

Larry, speaking of customer service, when I was on the ATN website today I was unable to find a manual for the IR Supernova. I wanted to check the specs for a potential purchase when a chat box popped up. This was at 8AM CST, at least two hours before ATN would open. Frank ended up sending me a link to the owners manual that contained the information I was looking for. Maybe during the day we will be able to contact ATN through their website to resolve some of our issues.

I lucked out. I powered it down, took it of the rifle, powered it up and it started the compass calibration. After performing the calibration, I mounted it to my AR and it has continued to work.

Jim, how did you force a compass calibration? ROG I would like to know this as well. Mine out of the box has the SMF error. Hello everyone. I am a relatively new ATN Owner. I just updated the firmware of my 4K Pro to the .510 version. The instructions for the update said that a compass re-calibration is required, but like everyone in the room, I could not get it to force the calibration until today. I have several smart devices that need to have their compass sensors calibrated from time to time and one of them says to hold the device and repeat a figure 8 pattern until the calibration starts. As I was thinking that I had an $800 paper weight and decided to give this method a go. At first It didn't work, but I tried again and this time my aggravation got ahold of me and I was a bit fiercer in my second figure 8 attempt. This time it worked and CAL replaced the SMF in the top center of the viewer. From there I rotated the scope on all three axis for a total of 12 revolutions per axis and now the compass works as advertised. Even though this thread is a few years old, I wanted to provide an answer on how to force the X-Sight 4K Pro into the compass calibration mode. I hope this will help all of you get back out to the field and continue shooting, whether it's for the hunt or just for the fun of it. Good luck to all of you.

It appears that there might be an issue with the gyro system or the calibration of the compass. The compass is almost stuck on one direction, and it only responds when the scope is pointed down towards the ground. This behavior is not normal, and the user may want to try calibrating the compass again or contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance. They may need to replace the scope or provide further troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
