Just started a new little project this afternoon. Stage one done. Who can guess what we are up to? Hint - it involves this piece, a female to female micro usb lead and a little more garage based engineering. Will post more pics as time allows and we progress along with it. I think the outcome will be quite cool. Cheers odin

Close - Dummy battery for IR torch so it can be powered by second power outlet on external battery pack. Planning to ditch the CR123 lithiums and convert it to usb supply. Cant buy one off the shelf so time to apply a little kiwi logic.

Send the idea to ATN. Maybe they'll send you a few goodies to wear.

Does anyone know if the end caps are available as a part for the stock IR torch that takes the CR123 Lithium batteries? Think it is the IR850B3. Am picking if the are it will be cheaper than making a replacement from scratch for our little project. Have tried ringing them but I dont think they take overseas calls.

Back into that external power supply IR project now that the Christmas madness is finally over. Had to shelve it for a while. Dummy battery made - female micro usb plug in place. Just need to solder the wires, glue them in place and reassemble. Attachments:

Odin, watching to see how well 5v works instead of 6v. Keep us posted - I may have to try this too! My external battery pack has 2 USB slots so it will run the scope and IR if you say "it's good"!

Wires soldered into place and hot glued to hold them tidily. Tested - green light comes on and can see the red glow down the lens. Just need to wait until tonight to see how good it will be.

The only issue that I can see is possibly current draw. LED lights are multi volt capable. The external pack gives 5V. 2 x internal CR123A's give 6V.

Had it out for 1/2 hour tonight. Worked like a charm - no freezing and quality seems identical to on batteries. Totally stoked.

I think I would do a much prettier dummy battery insert insert - What I have shown is pretty rough and ready. Would spin up specific terminals for it, and machine out the access to attach the wires - incidentley usb wiring is Red + (to endcap) Black - (to terminal deep in body). Attaching the dummy battery to endcap with a screw is strong and seems logical - screw also doubles as a terminal (once painted should not be an issue + end - shorting) Otherwise not sure anything needs altering. Anybody got suggestions?

Note that the IR torch does not look like this to the eye. I am assuming it is the camera that is sensitive to the IR light been projected from the torch.

Suggestion, could the USB port be made into the tail cap to keep the possibility of the external cord getting shorted/broken? Those wires are pretty thin. Next suggestion - make me one!

bigdaddyflo - I looked real hard at that & could not come up with a way to achieve that without major complications. With the sleeve and the wires glued in place inside the dummy battery I am sure that the design is nice and robust There is not enough room in the endcap to install one and the tube of the body is not of sufficient diameter to put one in the side without shorting out problems. If you want to pop around one weekend with your unit I am sure we could knock you up something. It is only a 15,600 mile round trip. Our weather here is probably a little nicer than yours at present.

Check out what voltage range your bulb can handle - that will be the kicker.

ok just found out its 3.7-4.2 volt and they say 6 volt will burn the driver board.SO im not sure if 5v is too far over the 4.2max or not.
I might be ok with 5v being only .8v over the advertized 4.7max. I may try to do this with a wooden dowel with a screw on each end and connect positive to one screw and negative to the other.

Well the usb power as i understand it is 5v max. So most likely will not be putting out the full 5v?
