It's winter, though it doesn't get much below 25F here. I'm in a Mediterranean climate and use my 4K for night vermin shooting. When it is cold the magnification wheel barely works, pretty much it is unresponsive. Does anyone else have this problem?

Mine was extremely tight at first. Just work it both directions for a bit and it will get easier. The last time I was out it was 15F, worked fine for me.

G'day,
I was out the other night looking for foxes and it was cold, i.e. close to zero C. I found that the magnification wheel turned easily, but any actual magnification of image that occurred did so very slowly from 3X to 8X. 8X was the best I could get before I became frustrated and quit, partly as I was shivering and probably could not have held the rifle still enough to aim. I attributed the problem to the cold - at first - but have hunted in similar weather before without problems so I wasn't certain. I shot a fox two nights later at about 50 yards. When I examined the dead animal the entry wound was much lower and 3+ inches from where I aimed. I went out yesterday and checked zero at 100 yards. To my surprise the bullet completely missed the target face. At 25 yards the bullet hit low left. [The fox I hit had very poor luck to be actually hit, let alone killed, given how far off zero was the rifle-scope combination.] I re-zeroed the rifle and went back to 100 yards and fired a shot which was, at least 'on paper'. While I walked down to check the target the 4K Pro scope image froze and stayed frozen for a few minutes until I held down the on/off button for a short period. Eventually the screen went black and then the scope restarted, however I had to reset the time and date. The scope is now working and zeroed so I was able to shoot a fox last evening at about 160 yards.
I now wonder if the failure of the magnification wheel to increase actual magnification on that very cold evening is a separate issue or part of an electronic 'temper tantrum' within the scope?

The scope "froze" (excuse the pun) on me once. I was using it at night with an IR torch. Suddenly, the screen became very dim (not black), and I began messing with the torch assuming the batteries died. Eventually, I realised that the HUD was frozen, and zoom wasn't functioning. The dimness was explained by the fact that the scope was no longer automatically adjusting "exposure" to compensate for changes in light (IR) coming in. A long press to power off and back on solved the issue. Now I know that the scope can crash while continuing to show the live sight picture, I am careful to note HUD elements moving (incline, compass, zoom etc), and keep an eye out for obviously over- or under-exposed image as I line up the shot.

There was a bug fix file on ATN's website at one time which normally fixed the freezing issue. Anytime you have to do a hard reset of the scope by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down, the time and date will need to be reset manually.

G'day beast,
Thanks for explaining what happens as a result of the 'hard reset'.
