I experience blank screen with newly purchased X-Sight 4K Pro 3-14x quite often. Very annoying. According to ATN, it is a problem with firmware revision #480 (which I have) and can be fixed by installing revision #483. This must be done using Firmware Restore routine through USB cable.
There is instruction video on the web site showing the whole procedure. I did the restore routine exactly as shown on the video. However, when it comes to the stage where you update the actual firmware, then available version is still #480.
There is another issue: You have to install .elf file first. If you download it from ATN cloud – as shown on the video – you get a file named atnxsight4k_3_1_00_101.elf. There is also a button on the firmware restore web site allowing to download .elf file directly from there. This file has name atnxsight4k.elf. These files are of different size, so they are not identical.
So, my questions are:
1 – which of these two .elf files is correct and should be used?
2 – how get firmware #483
I asked ATN about this several times be email, but these guys never answer. I am really fed up with the scope and the service provided. I am seriously considering sending the scope back.

Thanks Dino,
I got to your link but I could not find this particular (latest) #483 update which according to ATN should cure this blank (black) screen problem.
From what I could gather from the things stored in your Dropbox I need both .elf and bin file that are matched together. By the way, from the latest anouncement on ATN site, firmware updates should be done ONLY through Firmware Restore routine.

OK Now I get it.
I did the update exactly how it was done on the ATN video. It looked like the update process consists of two stages. First you download the .elf file (File option in expert mode). In the stage two you switch to Web option). Then you can see the current revision of .bin file, which in this case is #480. In result you always end up with #480, whatever .elf file you used in stage one.
So I repeated the proces using the latest .elf file, end stopped at this point. Now I have my scope with firmware revision #483. Why could not ATN explain it properly - or I am an idiot.
Thanks again Dino for your help.

You only need the elf file and the ATN Factory Restore application.
The tutorial is old but still valid. You can follow that procedures as well. They start to load a basic version of the Firmware check the good functionality of the scope and after then update it to the last version.
Best Regards

Well, I did the same thing, saw that the available binary was .480 and pulled the plug then went searching for threads and found this one. If I understand correctly, my scope will 'update' to .480 and then I just need to repeat the process to get the 'real' update? Is that correct?
Never mind, my scope is still at .483 after the app said it was updated to .480. So, I guess all is well.

if you get the ELF file from my dropbox folder or from the ATN ( www.atncorp.com/factory-restore-firmware ) at the bottom of the page. and if you use their side-load app at the end of process you will have the 483 version. I repeat... - Dowload the file 483.elf form the ATN page... - Use the SideLoad App to load only the 483.elf file... - At the end of process long press ( 15 seconds ) the Power Buttom... - Do a factory reset of the scope etc... You don't need to search last firmware from the SideLoad App, the 483 is the last but is not in its list for the moment... because is a bug fix version. Best Regards Dino

Ok, that makes sense. Coming from someone who deals with binaries quite often, it doesn’t make sense. Bug fix or not, I would have expected it to display the actual release regardless of status. I deal with this crap on routers and switches everyday...lol

Is there anyway to load firmware (483) from a Mac/Apple laptop? I don't have access to a Windows 10 device but tried to unzip Dino's elf file anyway and it didn't work...which is what I expected but you have to try right???

If you’re able to, you could possibly get Parallels for your Mac and install a Windows 10 VM on it. I believe you can do an Insiders version of Windows without having to buy a license. It’s been a few years since I’ve used Parallels, so I don’t know the current details. But, it could be a cheap option.

I had the same problem as I abandoned Windows over 12 years ago. I bought an open box laptop Win10 and I am using it only for ATN toys! It's bizarre and extravagant to do that, but, ATN it's special!

I have 7 of these scopes... 3 are going back as the compasses dont work.... they came new like this... I tried updateing firmware,,, keeps failing with elf file... IS THERE A BIN FILE FOR THE LATEST FIRMWARE 483?

I was able to use the ATN Firmware Updater app to get my 4k to .483 with no issues. I did follow the instructions in the video even though my scope wasn't having any of the issues listed.
I was shakng my head (again) by the way ATN does things and not having a .bin file available to its customers to download. Not everyone has a Windows 10 PC! Many like myself want to save a copy of the firmware for safe keeping. Hopefully in the future ATN will add the 4k's .bin file back onto thier website for downloading.
I downloaded Dino's, (thanks Dino) .483 elf file, extracted it, renamed it to xsight4k.bin, copied it to the SD card and tried to see if it would update that way, but it failed, so that's not an option.
For those that don't know, taking any one of the .bin files and renaming it to xsight4k.bin will allow an older version or same version to be uploaded to the scope.
I'm guessing if I use the .483 elf file with the ATN Firmware Update app, it will work but I have not tried that yet, maybe tomorrow.
Cheers, PB

Today I used Dino's .483 elf file and manually loaded it to my scope using ATN's Firmware Updater Windows app. Using "Expert" mode, it uploaded the firmware just fine with no issues.
I did find that the elf file I downloaded from the ATN website is identical to Dino's .483 elf file. I used a binary file comparison program on both files and they are identical.
The file I downloaded from the ATN website is named "xsight4k.elf". There's no reference to what version it is in the file name nor did I find any reference to what version it was on the webpage, maybe I missed it? I just renamed it so it included the version number.
I also read in another post, (sorry can't recall which one now), that the elf file can be grabbed from the Widnows system "temp" folder when using the ATN Updater Windows app. I'm guessing that needs to be done before exiting the Updater app but I haven't tried it, so don't know for sure.
Cheers, PB
